To Betty White, age is just a number. And at 99, she seems unstoppable. Many of us loved watching her on The Golden Girls and at 99 years young, she’s still making us laugh.
She was recently asked by Entertainment Tonight what she is doing to celebrate her birthday and she replied, “Running a mile each morning has been curtailed by COVID, so I am working on getting The Pet Set released and feeding the two ducks who come to visit me every day.”
In Hollywood, it is known that getting older is not easy, but White seems to do it with grace. So, the question is, how does she do it?
She breaks it down in 4 simple beliefs.
The first is to keep yourself busy. In 2017 White said in an interview by Katie Couric that the key to staying happy and healthy is to “Keep busy, and don’t focus everything on you – that wears out pretty fast.” She goes on to say, “It’s not hard to find things you’re interested in, but enjoy them, and indulge them and, I think that keeps you on your toes. In practicing what she preaches, White recently voiced a character in the hit movie Toy Story 4.
The second is to always stay optimistic. Research has shown that optimism can lead to life span up to 15% longer and can provided better odds that you will live to 85 or beyond. In a 2018 interview White told Parade the following: “I know it sounds corny, but I try to see the funny side and the upside, not the downside. I get bored with people who complain about this or that. It’s such a waste of time.”
Forget the numbers is the 3rd on White’s list. White said that she was told to lie about her age in Hollywood, but she didn’t feel like it was something to hide. To her, age is just a number. White said, “I never thought about age much. I learned that at my mother’s knee. Age was not important. It was where your head was. A strong mindset like Betty’s will help keep you on track and feeling great.
Lastly, White believes in treating yourself well. She believes that depriving yourself of your favorite foods isn’t a sustainable model and not fun either. White says that she always gives in to her cravings for hot dogs and vodka. And at 99, it seems to be working well for her.
While there is no research that proves hot dogs and vodka are the key to longevity, a healthy balanced diet paired with regular exercise is a proven way to live a healthy balanced life. Adding in supplements to your routine is a great way to improve your health naturally.
